My client’s request was for a black and white portrait of their pet Shih Tzu, Frankie.

I used System 3 acrylics on canvas with a range of flat and round brushes of medium size. The paint was layered using a limited palette of colours, in place of black (which has a tendency to lose vibrancy) I chose a warmer mix of ultramarine blue and burnt umber. This mix was tinted with alizarin crimson to add further warmth and then titanium white to create grey sections. Finally, highlighted details were added with titanium white alone.
