This watercolour and coloured pencil portrait was inspired after a visit to Benidorm zoo in Spain. Textures were produced by sprinkling rock salt into washes on the background and foreground rocks, then enhancing them with coloured pencil detailing. The body colour on the Penguin was built up from an initial application of watercolour using overlapping blocks of pastel washes. Once this base was in place shading and blending was built up using coloured pencils.
300lb stretched rough watercolour paper was used for this project which assisted with the creation of textures.
